Act Great

What is the key to untie the knot of your mind’s suffering? Act great.  My dear, always act great.”

Hafez, the great 14th century Sufi poet, highlights a key to the yogic path. Briefly put,  our actions, not our intentions, are what count.  The emphasis is on the doing.  Or, as the famous Nike slogan tells us: JUST DO IT.

We don’t wait until we feel good to start, or continue, our yoga practice.

We don’t wait until our minds are quiet to meditate.

We don’t wait until we feel loving to do the right thing in our relationships.

No,  the key is to act great now, whether we feel good or not.  It may be awkward and uncomfortable, but the actions we do today help transform  us and loosen the hold of old familiar patterns.

Actually, by acting great now — by doing the thing we need to do — we may discover that it wasn’t really that difficult.

  1. As I read somewhere recently – Silence, incense, candles, easy to meditate! Try staying calm when cut off on the freeway. 🙂
